Getting an MBA and a couple of power suits isnt enough these days to move ahead in business. You also have to look good and stay that way. The ugly truth, according to Do Pretty People Earn More? author Kate Lorenz (CareerBuilder.com), is that ordinary or homely people earn up to 20% less than their more attractive counterparts. The conclusion is clear: it pays to look good.

Baldness is the number one complaint of men regarding their appearance the biggest detraction from attractiveness and youthful vigor because it affects so many. Hair Restoration tops the list of preferred cosmetic procedures along with liposuction, rhinoplasty, and eyelid surgery. The American Academy of Dermatology states that 50% of men suffer from some degree of male pattern baldness.

Polls consistently show that men and women feel that hair loss places an individual at a significant disadvantage in politics, business, romance, and daily life. While it has been long perceived to be a detriment in the social sphere, it is also considered to be a serious impediment to career advancement.

The National Hair Journal has reported that research by the Emmid Institute in Munich concludes balding men have less change of getting the jobs they want then men with hair. In an experiment where applicants submitted photos of themselves along with resumes, only 27% of bald job-seekers were called in for interviews versus 41% with hair). Those in the public eye sales professionals, athletes, attorneys, actors and public personalities, politicians have always been on the forefront of those seeking cosmetic hair loss treatment. Now, businessmen are desperately seeking solutions to help them hang onto or achieve success in a highly competitive, often cutthroat world. Is there to be no heir apparent if there is no hair apparent?

The International society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) reports in a 2006 survey that 77% of adults would be concerned if they were just starting out in their career and were experiencing noticeable hair loss. The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) just revealed in data from their Consumer Perception Study that five out of six consumers believe that personal appearance is key to professional success and one in five Americans said that they would have cosmetic surgery some day. The interest in cosmetic surgery procedures among men is due to the work environment, says Jeff Knezovich, Executive Vice President of the AACS. These days, men are thinking I want to be competitive in the marketplaceto compete with the younger person coming in the door. They report that hair transplantation constituted 27% of cosmetic procedures in 2005.

The psychology behind the baldness syndrome is lack of self-esteem and a negative self image that stem from the association of hair loss with aging and loss of virility. A bald spot is seen as an undesirable asset in the march down the paths of industry where youthfulness is a testimony to energy and creative invention. Statistics have long shown the impact of height on advancement and are now suggesting that the erosion of confidence that comes with thinning hair may also have a negative affect on ones ability to climb the corporate ladder.

Hair care companies are now targeting men in their marketing of products with volumizing shampoos and conditioners. Treatments such as Propecia and topical Minoxidil are selling better than ever. Cosmetic surgery as a solution to hair loss is also in an upswing. Medical clinics such as Bosley, the largest company in the U.S., are reporting an increase in requests for surgical hair transplantation in the thirty to forty age range.

I had my hair restored with hair transplantation at Bosley for two reasons, says Howard Lapidis, Seafood Broker from Minneapolis. The first was personal. When my hair started thinning, it made me look and feel older than I really was. I wanted to turn back the clock and maintain a youthful appearance. The second reason was professional. Having my own business, interacting with high-level buyers, I felt I needed every advantage I could get. (Before and after photos available upon request.)

Hair restoration, among other cosmetic procedures, is therefore a good business investment these days for ambitious people who not only want to get ahead, but also to just get hired!
